Cherry Gloss

Dark, smoky cherry with rose and leather, often compared to Tom Ford's Lost Cherry. Gorgeous cold, more debated lit, and not a juicy fruit candle.

Cherry Gloss candle by Voluspa

Half the appeal is the glass. Cherry Gloss comes in deep red bubbled glass, and one fan's favorite thing about burning it is watching the flame glitter through it. Voluspa launched it as a Valentine's scent with plenty of date-night marketing, and it has stuck around as one of the line's most talked-about newer candles.

The other half is a perfume comparison. A Reddit poster bought it for a daughter who wears Tom Ford's Lost Cherry and found the two nearly identical, with a detail worth knowing: sniffed side by side, the little tins leaned toward cherry lollipop while the glass jar carried more of the smoky side. Commenters agreed on the resemblance, at least cold. One who isn't a cherry person loves it anyway and can smell it faintly through gift wrap in a closet, and two people told the poster to get the jar.

Cherry after dark

Voluspa builds it from smoked cherry and rose petals with a little leather, plus guaiac wood in the longer description, and that's the key to the mixed reviews. This is not a juicy, maraschino cherry. Two Reddit fans who love fruity candles say it barely reads as fruit, one of them happily and one with disappointment. A blogger calls it midnight cherry, a bruised fruit with rose and leather that suits evenings and reminded her of Harlem Candle Co, though she found it lovelier sitting unlit than burning. One shop reviewer went further and got a cloying baby-powder note once it was lit. Then again, a Voluspa regular who finds nearly all of the brand's fruity scents queasy makes a single exception for this one.

Throw and sizes

It carries better than many Voluspas. The blogger's little $16 tin filled her living room and burned a long time, and one Reddit collector says the 18 oz jar spreads nicely through her living and dining area and runs strong in bedrooms and baths. Bloomingdale's reviewers call it sweet but never overpowering. The Large Jar is $48 and the 9 oz Classic $30; the 3-wick hearth ($98) is the showpiece.

Questions

Is Voluspa Cherry Gloss a dupe for Tom Ford Lost Cherry?

It's the comparison everyone makes, and several Reddit fans who wear Lost Cherry say it's very close, especially sniffed cold. Once lit it reads smokier and darker, with rose and leather in front of the fruit.

Does Cherry Gloss smell like fresh cherries?

Not really. Buyers who expect a juicy cherry candle are often surprised; it's a smoky, rosy, slightly leathery cherry that suits a night in more than a summer afternoon.
