These days the name Mokara, on its own, lives mostly on a little 4 oz tin. Voluspa has relabeled the bigger candles in this scent as Mokara Orchid, but the mini tin and a refill for the Classic jar still carry the short name the scent launched with in 2009, when it sat in the Japonica line beside Baltic Amber and Goji Tarocco Orange. The notes haven't changed: mokara orchid, white lily and spring moss.
Its fans are quiet but devoted. One Reddit poster says Mokara and Diptyque's Baies are the only two candles they never tire of, even after months of burning; another went hunting for a cheaper lookalike and was told, a little tartly, to just buy the real thing. At least one fragrance-oil supplier sells a "compare to Mokara" blend, which says something about its staying power. On Fragrantica, a longtime wearer of the matching room and body spray describes a white floral with a gentle earthiness from the moss, deeper than most white florals and at its best in summer heat.
What it doesn't do is shout. One Reddit fan calls it a subtle background candle, and one person who finds Voluspa's florals strong names Mokara as the exception. A blogger who burned a 9 oz jar smelled very little until it was halfway down, then a light, pleasant floral that vanished as soon as the flame went out, plus some soot on long burns and a wick that mushroomed.
Thirty-nine Amazon reviewers average 4.0 stars, an 8.0 Glow Score and a little under most of its siblings. That's where the tin earns its keep: at $16 for about 25 hours, it's the cheap way to learn whether Mokara's hush suits you, and a few Voluspa regulars say their small tins throw better than the jars anyway.
