Moso Bamboo

One of Voluspa's best sellers smells less like a bamboo spa than a sweet conifer with berries tucked behind it. The tin is the format that throws.

Moso Bamboo candle by Voluspa

Nobody seems quite sure what moso bamboo smells like, including the people who love this candle. A candle YouTuber who has reviewed it twice admits she has no idea; a blogger says the same, then lights it and finds something else entirely. What most people end up describing is a tree: a sweet conifer, closer to cedar or cypress than to anything green and spa-like, with a faint fruitiness behind it. One Reddit fan, apologizing for being bad at this, lands on sweet pine.

The fruit is what surprises people. Voluspa's description wanders past huckleberry vines and dark, musky soil, and on her second review the YouTuber found the berry running the show once the candle was lit: bright, almost citrusy and sparkling on top, with a dank, mossy musk anchoring it underneath. She likens it to Harry Slatkin's Snow Day, a balsam with citrus, and says this one performs better. Two of her viewers replied that they'd never have guessed it was fruity. It has long been the line's unisex pick, poured in near-black navy glass, and a fan on X once suggested it to someone who finds most candles too girly.

No fixed season

Fans can't agree on when to burn it, which may be the point. One Redditor says it doesn't feel like fall; another calls it a great wintry scent; a YouTube commenter saves it for December, and a TikTok creator calls it gorgeous for spring and summer. The blogger who didn't care for it found it pure holiday, pine and a little spice, like walking into a craft store, and she did not mean that kindly. A Burning Woods devotee keeps both in the bedroom and says they pair beautifully.

Getting it to throw

Throw follows the usual Voluspa pattern, with extra wobble. Someone who gets Voluspa wholesale through work calls it their favorite yet has had jars that throw beautifully and jars that smell of nothing, and another buyer couldn't pick up a big jar from a foot away. The tin fares better (three wicks, $32): medium throw that mostly stays in the room it's in, by one collector's notes, and roughly a 7 on the YouTuber's 10-point scale for throw, who got four or five strong burns before the wide, shallow pool ran low and the scent faded with it. One fan swears by the reed diffuser for a guest bath.

With 4.5 Amazon stars over 430 reviews it scores 9.0 on our Glow Score, second only to Goji Tarocco Orange among Voluspa candles with a few hundred reviews. One caution matters more here than usual: the wax is very soft, and a jar tucked away for a year can lose most of its scent, so buy it to burn.

Questions

What does Voluspa Moso Bamboo actually smell like?

Less like bamboo than a sweet evergreen, somewhere between cypress and pine, with a bright berry note and a soft musk underneath. People who expect a green, spa-style bamboo are usually surprised by how fruity it is.

Is Moso Bamboo a fall candle?

Not really, and not really anything else either. Fans burn it in December for its conifer side, in spring and summer for its brightness, and a few say it doesn't read as fall at all. It's one of the easier Voluspa scents to keep lit all year.
